every once in a while there is a time and place that will be forever etched in your mind. could be your 8th birthday party, that time you prayed all night for enough snow to closed school the next day and your prayer was answered, or the way your spouse looked on the day you got married. this is not that kind of memory. oh it will be forever etched in my mind, but not because of the warm fuzzy felling i get when i recall it. it's more of a feared for my life kinda memory.
taxi drivers. you would think they would actually know how to drive. well if your in mexico when you are assuming that they have gone through some sort of drivers course and know the "rules" of the road in their fine country you've got another thing coming. the drivers are more dare devils than your friendly neighborhood chauffeur. as we boarded the many cabs we took during our two week stay, they started to become more of an amusement park ride rather than a way to get from place to place. we would get in, sit down, make sure our seat belts were as tight as possible, and then white knuckle it as we broke out in nervous laughter. driver after driver kept us on our toes as they continually turned two lane roads into 5 lane roads, cut off just about anything that move, and applied the brakes with only inches to spare. we were happy to arrive with our lunches still firmly implanted in our stomaches let alone alive.
the next time you get in the mood for some cheep thrills forget about a roller-coaster. just catch a plane to mexico and flag down a cab.
then.....
get in, sit down, and shut up. it won't hurt a bit. i promise.
(the photo was taken in one of my new favorite cities. guanajuato. i highly recomend it to everyone)
